How to Get Better at Rocket LeagueWhat to Fix at Your Rank, in the Order That Matters

Most players practise the flashy stuff and lose games to the basics. The fix depends on your rank: a Silver needs clean touches and rotation, a Diamond needs to win the air, a Champion needs consistency. Here’s what to work on at each rank band, a daily routine, and the habits that quietly cost you MMR.

TL;DR

The Plan in One Screen

Bronze to Gold

Touches and rotation

Hit the ball on purpose and stop double committing.

Platinum to Diamond

Aerials and recoveries

Fast aerials, half-flips and landing on your wheels.

Champion

Wall play and reads

Backboard reads, shadow defense, controlled dribbles.

Grand Champion and up

Consistency

Fewer mistakes per game beats new mechanics.

How climbing works

Why You’re Stuck at the Same Rank

Epic says there’s no fixed number of games to rank up: it depends on your wins, your losses and how hard your matches were. In practice that means the climb stalls when one habit costs you a game in every three. You don’t need new mechanics to fix that, you need to find the habit. It’s exactly what Rocket League coaching does with your replays.

The habits that lose most games

  • Two players going for the same ball, leaving an open net.
  • Chasing the ball instead of rotating back post.
  • Spending all your boost on the first challenge.
  • Taking a 50/50 you didn’t need, from a bad angle.
  • Landing upside down after every aerial.

What to Work On at Each Rank

Where each band starts in 2v2, from Tracker Network’s MMR ranges on October 16, 2026, and what usually separates it from the next one.

Bronze to Gold (2v2 below about 646)

  1. 1

    Clean touches

Hit the ball toward a target, not just away. Free play, ten minutes, before anything else.

  2. 2

    Basic rotation

After you hit the ball, go back toward your own goal on the far side, through the small boost pads.

  3. 3

    Boost from small pads

Grab the small pads on your path instead of crossing the field for a big one.

  4. 4

    First aerials

Jump, tilt back, boost. Novice packs first, then shots off the wall.

Platinum to Diamond (2v2 from about 646)

  1. 1

    Fast aerials

Jump, boost and jump again almost at once. You beat players to the ball who are still floating up.

  2. 2

    Recoveries

Half-flip to turn around fast, and land on your wheels so you can go again straight away.

  3. 3

    Powerslide

Turn tight without losing speed. Bind it to a shoulder button.

  4. 4

    Shadow defense

Stay between the ball and your goal and wait for the mistake, instead of diving in.

Champion (2v2 from about 1,075)

  1. 1

    Backboard reads

Know where the ball comes off your backboard before it gets there.

  2. 2

    Wall play

Air dribbles and wall shots, but only when the play is there.

  3. 3

    Controlled dribbles

Carry the ball and flick, so the defender has to commit first.

  4. 4

    Passing

Centre the ball for your teammate instead of forcing a shot from the corner.

Grand Champion and up (2v2 from about 1,435)

  1. 1

    Consistency

At this level the game is lost by the team with more small errors. Count yours in replays.

  2. 2

    Air roll control

Precise touches in the air, not just reaching the ball.

  3. 3

    Speed of play

Faster decisions and faster rotations, with boost always ready.

  4. 4

    Demos and bumps

Used on purpose to open the net, not as a way to chase.

Habits That Protect Your MMR

Before and during ranked

  • Warm up before your first ranked game, every time.
  • Stop after two losses in a row and come back later.
  • Queue with a regular partner: Epic’s party matching blends both players’ skill.
  • Don’t leave early. Epic says the first player to leave loses more MMR and gets a matchmaking ban.
FAQ

Questions Players Ask

How do I get better at Rocket League fast?+

Find the one habit that loses you the most games, usually rotation or double commits, and train only that for a week: a short warm-up, one training pack, free play and one replay a day.

How many games does it take to rank up in Rocket League?+

There’s no fixed number. Epic says it depends on your wins and losses and on how hard your matches were.

What should I practise in Rocket League as a beginner?+

Clean touches in free play, basic rotation back to your goal, grabbing small boost pads and your first aerials.

How do I get out of Platinum or Diamond?+

Fast aerials, quick recoveries with half-flips, powerslide turns and patient shadow defense.

Is it better to play 2v2 or 3v3 to improve?+

Doubles gives you more touches and makes rotation mistakes obvious, so it’s the faster playlist to learn in.
