The ladder

How the Rocket League Rank System Works

Epic’s own help page lists the ladder. Each rank is split into four divisions, from Division I up to Division IV.

Epic’s example: Gold III Division II means you’re three divisions from Platinum I. Your rank in one playlist doesn’t carry over to another, and each playlist has its own MMR. Stuck on the same division for weeks? That’s what Rocket League boosting is for, and the rest of this guide shows where the line sits.

Gaining and losing

What Changes Your MMR After a Match

Epic explains the rules on its matchmaking help page. These are the ones that matter for climbing.

From Epic’s matchmaking rules

  • Win more than you lose and you move up. There’s no fixed number of games per division.
  • Match difficulty counts: beating higher ranked players earns more, losing to them costs less.
  • In a party, matchmaking uses a weighted average of everyone’s skill, not just the best player.
  • From Champion up, that average leans harder toward the highest ranked player in the party.
  • Two players queuing 3v3 Standard together must be within 3 ranks of each other.
  • The first player to leave a match early loses more MMR and gets a matchmaking ban.

Placements and predicted rank

Your rank is evaluated after placement matches, and your predicted rank uses your other competitive playlists. Epic built this to stop returning players from sitting below their real skill.

What About the Rank Distribution?

Psyonix doesn’t publish the share of players at each rank. Tracker Network used to, and on October 16, 2026 its distribution page shows player counts as still being estimated. So any percentage you find right now is from an older season. The MMR ranges above are the stable part, and they’re what decides your rank.
