Should I Make a New League Account for Ranked?A new account resets your rank, not your problem
Season 3 just started and the temptation is obvious. Clean slate, no loss streak attached to your name, a fresh MMR. Here is what actually happens when you do it, and the three options worth comparing first.

Usually no. A new account clears your visible rank, but you rebuild MMR from a default starting point and the system moves you toward your real level within a fairly small number of games. If you are genuinely a Silver player, a fresh account lands you back in Silver after 80 or more games of levelling first.
A new account makes sense when:
- ✓You want to learn a genuinely different role from scratch
- ✓You are moving to a closer server for ping reasons
- ✓A behaviour restriction on your main is the actual blocker
- ✓You improved a lot during a long break and want MMR to catch up faster
It does not make sense when:
Your reason is "my MMR is ruined" or "my teammates are holding me back". Both of those follow you to the new account, because both of them are downstream of how you play. You will spend roughly a hundred games to arrive at the same wall.
What Actually Resets, and What Follows You
Your visible rank resets
The badge goes away. This is the part everyone notices, and it is the only part that is genuinely gone.
Your decision making does not
The same warding habits, the same greedy recalls, the same fights taken at 40 seconds before Baron. All of it follows you.
Your skill ceiling does not
A fresh account climbs to roughly where your play belongs. If you are a genuine Silver player, you land in Silver again.
Your time is spent twice
Levelling to 30, unlocking a champion pool, then grinding placements. That is time not spent fixing the actual issue.
The uncomfortable version: rank is a measurement, not a cage. Resetting the measurement does not change what is being measured. That is why the fresh account honeymoon ends so fast, and why players who restart twice usually land in the same division both times.
The Real Cost of Starting Over
Levelling to 30
80 to 120 games
Normals only. No ranked progress during any of it.
Champion pool unlock
Blue essence grind
Ranked requires a minimum owned champion count on a fresh account.
Placements
A short series
Your starting rank is driven mostly by hidden MMR, not by the placement wins themselves.
Climbing back
Same skill, same wall
You arrive at the rank your play supports, which is usually the rank you just left.
Add it up and a full restart is commonly a hundred or more games before your first ranked match. If the levelling phase is the only part you want to skip, a hand leveled account removes that phase without touching anything else about your situation.
Your Three Real Options
| Option | What you get | Speed | Cost | Fixes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level a new account | Clean rank history | Very slow | Free, but 80+ games | Nothing |
| Buy a ready account | Level 30, ranked eligible | Immediate | Low | The grind, not the skill |
| Fix the current accountBest | Higher rank, same account | Fast | Medium | The actual problem |
If the grind is the problem
A ready made account skips levelling entirely and puts you in ranked the same day.

Every EloAscend account is hand leveled by a real player. No bots, no scripts, no shared history. You get the clean slate on day one instead of on game one hundred.
View Available Accounts ->What Changed in 2026
This matters because the answer used to be softer. Making a second account to stomp lower ranks was once treated as a minor infraction. In 2026 it is not, and the difference is worth understanding before you decide.
Smurfing moved brackets
The 2026 ranked policy from Riot places smurfing in the rank manipulation category, alongside boosted and scripted accounts.
It is reportable in game
Rank manipulation and smurfing now appear directly in the in game reporting menu, which means detection is crowd assisted.
Penalties escalate
The published penalty ladder starts at a three day suspension, moves to two weeks, and ends in a permanent ban for repeat offenders.
Penalties can travel
Where Riot links multiple accounts to the same player, action can apply across all of them rather than just the flagged one.
The practical read: a second account used normally, at your own skill level, is ordinary play. A second account used specifically to sit far below your real rank is what the 2026 policy targets. The distinction is intent and behaviour, not the existence of the account.
When a New Account IS the Right Call
You want a different role or region
A second account for a genuinely different purpose, like learning jungle from scratch or playing on a closer server, is normal use.
Your main is behaviour restricted
If chat restrictions or low priority queue are the blocker, that is a behaviour problem with a behaviour fix, and a fresh start can be part of it.
You genuinely improved offline
If you took a long break, studied, and came back playing at a clearly higher level, a fresh MMR can reflect that faster than grinding out of a deep hole.
Notice what these have in common. Every one of them is a new account for a different purpose, not a new account to escape the same purpose. If your reason does not fit that pattern, the account is not the thing to change. Your decision making is.
Final Verdict
A new account is a hundred game detour that returns you to the rank you already had. It is the right move for a genuinely different goal and the wrong move for the same goal with a cleaner scoreboard.
- ->Want to skip only the levelling grind? Buy a hand leveled account.
- ->Want a higher rank on the account you already play? Boosting is the direct path.
- ->Want the wall to stop coming back? The fix is how you play, not where you play it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I make a new League account for ranked?+
In most cases, no. A new account resets your visible rank but not the habits that produced it. Unless your goal is a different role, a different region, or escaping a behaviour restriction, you will usually climb back to roughly the same rank after spending 80 or more games getting there.
Does a new League account get easier games?+
Briefly, and then not at all. Fresh accounts start near a default hidden MMR and the system adjusts quickly. Riot has stated it accelerates MMR gains for suspected smurfs specifically so they reach their real level faster, which shortens the easy stretch further.
Is my MMR reset when I make a new account?+
Your old MMR does not carry over, so a new account starts fresh. That is not the same as an advantage. The system moves you toward your true skill level within a fairly small number of games, so the reset mostly buys time rather than rank.
How long does it take to get ranked on a new account?+
You need account level 30 and a minimum owned champion pool before ranked unlocks, which typically runs 80 to 120 normal games depending on how you play and whether you use experience boosts. Placements come after that.
Is smurfing bannable in League of Legends in 2026?+
It carries real risk now. The 2026 ranked policy from Riot moved smurfing into the rank manipulation bracket alongside boosted and scripted accounts, made it reportable in game, and applies an escalating penalty ladder from a three day suspension up to a permanent ban.
Is it faster to buy a level 30 account or level one myself?+
Buying is faster by a wide margin, since it removes the entire levelling phase. The trade off is that it solves the grind, not the gameplay. If your goal is a higher rank rather than a fresh start, fixing your current account is usually the better use of the money.
Will a new account give me better teammates?+
Not in any lasting way. Teammate quality tracks your MMR, and your MMR tracks your results. A new account changes the number attached to you, not the standard of play you consistently produce.
Does a new account fix a bad win rate?+
It hides it rather than fixes it. A poor win rate is information about how you play, not a permanent mark on the account. Starting over clears the record and then rebuilds the same record, usually within a season.
Pick the option that matches your actual goal
Fresh start, higher rank, or better play. They are three different problems with three different answers.
Season 3 started July 29. The earlier in a split you sort this out, the more games it pays off across.
