LoL Classic Ranked Explained5 placements, 100 SP and one PvP queue
Classic has a real ladder, but no separate Ranked button. At Classic Level 10, five placement matches give you an Emblem and division. Seasonal Points show your climb; hidden MMR guides matchmaking. Here is what Riot has confirmed, what remains unclear, and why putting every player in one PvP queue has caused debate.
- Queue
- One PvP draft
- Unlock
- Classic Level 10
- Placements
- 5 matches
- Promotion
- 100 SP
TL;DR
The Ranked rules that matter
Is it Ranked?
Yes, within one queue
Summoner’s Journey tracks competitive progress in the same Classic PvP draft queue everyone uses.
First rank
After 5 placements
Reach Classic Level 10, then your next five Classic matches set an initial Emblem and division.
Visible progress
Seasonal Points
SP rises after wins, falls after losses, and 100 SP advances a division or Emblem.
Matchmaking
Hidden MMR
Riot uses a separate hidden estimate of skill. It has not published a fixed SP gain formula.
Does LoL Classic have a Ranked queue?
It has Ranked progression, but everyone enters the same Classic PvP draft queue.
Riot calls Summoner's Journey Classic's ranked progression. You earn an Emblem, move through divisions, and gain or lose Seasonal Points. Yet Classic launched with one PvP draft queue, alongside Co-op vs AI and custom games. There is no separate Ranked button to tell your team that you want a competitive session. See Riot's progression rules and its Classic launch explanation.
That changes the social contract before champion select. One teammate may be testing an old build; another may be protecting Diamond SP. Both selected the same valid mode. The resulting tension is real even though their individual intentions are impossible to know from a match result.
How do placements and promotions work?
Classic Level unlocks the ladder. Five matches set the first displayed position.
Placement path
- Play Classic to Level 10. This level is separate from your normal League account level.
- Play five Classic matches after the Journey unlocks.
- Receive an initial Emblem and division based on those placements.
- Continue playing Classic PvP matches to gain or lose visible SP.
Riot's current rules do not say everyone starts Salt IV. They say placements decide the initial Emblem and division. Classic Level runs from 0 to 30 and is separate from your normal League account level.
| Emblem | Divisions | Progression |
|---|---|---|
| Salt | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Wood | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Silver | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Gold | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Platinum | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Diamond | IV to I | 100 SP per division |
| Legend | No divisions | No SP cap |
Legend is different
Legend has no divisions or SP cap. Riot expected only a single-digit percentage of players to reach it, but that is a design expectation, not a fixed SP cutoff.
SP versus MMR: what can you see?
SP shows the climb. Hidden MMR is Riot's matchmaking estimate.
The useful mental model
Wins raise SP and losses lower it. At 100 SP, you advance a division or Emblem. Riot says falling below 0 SP results in demotion, while Division IV is the floor for each Emblem except Legend. Check the client when a particular boundary matters.
Riot has not published a universal “win X SP, lose Y SP” formula or explained whether modern Solo/Duo MMR seeds Classic matchmaking. Your modern rank is not your Classic Emblem, and five placements do not reveal the exact weighting of pre-Level-10 games. Claims about guaranteed starting lobbies or precise placement tricks go beyond the published rules.
Want to climb Classic's Journey?
Check the rank service only after you know how Classic's Emblems and SP work. If learning the mode is the goal, play the queue first.
What does Aegis of Valor do?
Winning in a role you preferred less earns extra visible SP.
| Assigned role | Win bonus |
|---|---|
| Third preference | +40% SP on a win |
| Fourth preference | +70% SP on a win |
| Fifth preference | +100% SP on a win |
Aegis is a bonus to visible SP on a win. Riot does not say it doubles hidden MMR or guarantees compensation for a loss. The extra points reward a successful game in a lower-priority position; they do not prove matchmaking changed your skill rating.
Why is one queue controversial?
The ladder gives wins meaning, while the queue gives players no way to agree on the stakes beforehand.
Riot described Classic as a mode to enjoy with friends rather than a dedicated ranked grind. One draft queue keeps that experience together. It also puts experimentation and ladder competition in the same lobby. A separate queue would let players opt into those stakes before champion select, as they can in modern League.
That criticism does not establish that Classic MMR is fake or that every mixed-skill lobby is broken. Riot has not supplied the match data needed for either conclusion. Player discussion illustrates the questions people ask; it is not a measure of how most players feel.
Our view: SP gives Classic players a reason to care about wins, but the shared queue leaves teammates unable to choose matching expectations. If you want a dedicated competitive switch, modern Solo/Duo has one. If old kits and the Classic map brought you back, Journey adds stakes without requiring a second queue.
Are Legend rewards or a new queue confirmed?
Plan around published rules, not a promised reward or queue that Riot has not announced.
Riot documents Classic Level rewards, including the Level 30 skin, separately from Summoner's Journey. Its current progression page does not list a Legend-only season reward or a launch date for a separate Ranked queue. That describes the published rules as of September 26, 2026; it is not a prediction that Riot will never add either feature.
Before planning a long climb around a reward, check the in-client Journey panel and Riot's current progression page. EloAscend's Classic hub distinguishes Classic Level progress from Journey rank progress for the same reason.
LoL Classic Ranked FAQ
The common questions, answered from Riot's published rules.
Does LoL Classic have a separate Ranked queue?+
No. Summoner’s Journey is ranked progression inside Classic’s single PvP draft queue. Riot also lists Co-op vs AI and custom games as separate ways to play Classic.
When does Summoner’s Journey unlock?+
It unlocks at Classic Level 10. The next five Classic matches determine your first Emblem and division.
Does everyone start at Salt IV?+
Riot’s current progression rules say five placement matches determine the initial Emblem and division. They do not say every player is fixed to Salt IV.
What is the difference between SP and MMR in LoL Classic?+
Seasonal Points, or SP, are visible points that move your Journey rank. MMR is Riot’s hidden estimate of skill used for matchmaking. Riot has not published a universal SP gain or loss per match.
How many SP do you need to promote?+
Riot says 100 SP advances you to the next division or Emblem. Salt through Diamond have divisions IV to I. Legend has no divisions or SP cap.
Can you demote in Summoner’s Journey?+
Riot says falling below 0 SP results in demotion. Its support page also identifies Division IV as the floor for each Emblem, except Legend. Check the client for a specific boundary case.
What does Aegis of Valor do?+
When you win in a lower-priority assigned role, Aegis adds 40% SP for your third preference, 70% for your fourth, or 100% for your fifth. Riot describes an SP win bonus, not an MMR bonus.
Does modern Solo/Duo rank determine Classic rank?+
Your modern Solo/Duo rank is not your Classic Emblem. Riot has not explained whether modern MMR seeds Classic matchmaking, so no exact starting lobby can be promised.
Is there a confirmed Legend-only reward?+
Riot documents Classic Level rewards separately from Summoner’s Journey. Its published progression page does not list a Legend-only season reward as of September 26, 2026.
