Support Engage Timing - When to Go In and When to Hold

Last updated: 14 Jan 2026

Engage supports win games by choosing the right timing, not just the right champion. Here’s a clear framework for consistent engage decisions.

1) Wave State Decides the Engage

Engage when:

  • your wave is pushing
  • the enemy is extended
  • you can crash and reset after the trade

Never engage on a wave that’s pushing into you unless the trade is guaranteed.

2) Cooldown Tracking

Engage only if key enemy tools are down:

  • enemy flash
  • enemy peel (e.g., Janna Q, Lulu polymorph)
  • enemy jungle position unknown

3) The “Two Buttons” Rule

If your ADC has two important buttons up (summoners or main damage), your engage has higher success.

4) Objective Timing

Engage is strongest when it creates objective pressure. A won fight that leads to dragon is far more valuable than a random kill.

5) Common Engage Mistakes

  • Engaging on a bad wave
  • Fighting without vision
  • Using all cooldowns before your ADC can follow

6) Simple Engage Checklist

  • Is my wave in a good spot?
  • Are enemy cooldowns down?
  • Can my ADC follow?

If any answer is no, hold your engage.
